Question
I know my male standard poodle is full breed, but I no longer have his papers. And I really don't want to get him spaded and he is humping on everyone and anything. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hello Humma,
Before getting a "girlfriend" for your Poodle, you should decide if you really want to breed your boy or not.  Even if he is papered, is he a very good quality dog?  Do you know his background?  You need to make sure that there is no genetic problems with his parents or grandparents that could be passed on to his puppies.  Just because he is humping on things, this doesn't mean that he needs to breed.  It just means that he becoming sexually mature.  Think of the effects of breeding your male before jumping into things, PLEASE.  I only say this as a Breeder of Std Poodles for several years.  I am not telling you that you can or can't breed.  I am just asking that you not bring more puppies into the world unless you intend to fully take on the responsibility of a litter of puppies.  Do you have buyers for the puppies, do you know how to raise a litter of puppies, do you realize that some females can have as many as 12 puppies in a litter?  Please consider this and the many other things a litter entails before getting into this!!

Non-sexual humping is a way to establish dominance over another dog or person, and is not always sexual.  Puppies will sometimes mount another dog to dominate that other dog and show the other dog that he/she is boss.
Obedience training will help your Std Poodle be a more behaved dog and will give you some control over him.  Contact your local Vet or Pet Store to see if they can recommend any Obedience trainers in your area.
I know you say that you don't want to neuter your boy, but if you don't plan on breeding him, it is safer and more healthy to get them neutered.  You decrease his risk for reproductive cancers, you help control his desire to find and breed with those females who are in heat in his area, and you help make him a more calm and happy boy.  Dogs who are neutered DO NOT get fat and lazy as some people claim.  Instead, you get a dog who is more focused on being a good pet rather than one who just wants to run around making more puppies all the time.

I hope I have helped you some.  If you have other questions about Breeding or other questions in general, please feel free to ask.
