sudden weight loss

Question
our toy poodle, age 8, has lost about 2 lbs. from his 9 lb. frame within the past two months.  the vet said his thyroid numbers are low, and she's checking further into a thyroid problem.  nothing else has changed, except he has an increased appetite; no sign of worms in stool; slight elevation of white blood cells.  has always had high energy and, aside from the obvious weight loss, shows no other signs --  can you help?

Answer
Hello Marie,
To be honest, this is not my area of expertise and I don't want to lead you wrong on this.  I will suggest that you take a stool sample into your Vet if you haven't already because you said that you saw no signs of worms in the stool.  There are a couple of types of worms that can't be seen by the naked eye that your dog could have, that might be cause for concern.
Once that has been taken care of, you might try adding some things to his dry kibble to put the weight back on him.

This is a good diet that will add some meat and veggies to your dogs food and also some good vitamins and minerals.

1 lb Hamburger or Turkey Burger (70-30 because of higher fat content)
1/2 lb Spinach
1/2 lb Broccoli
1 can Sardines in Olive Oil (use the oil of the sardines and blend it with the Spinach and Broccoli to make a juice
2 eggs scrambled
1 Apple Blended (or you can use 1/2 cup of Applesauce)
1/4 tsp Garlic powder
1/2 cup brown rice, cooked using chicken broth for better flavor
1 grated carrot

This diet is for a large breed dog, so you can half this if you need to.  If you make this up and combine it, it will store good in a sealed container for up to a week in the fridge.

On this site, there is an Ask The Vet section in the Dogs category.  I would post your question to a couple of the Vets on here also.  They will be better qualified to help you out.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions, please feel free to ask.
