Urine Stains

Question
I have a 4 1/2 month old Standard Female Poodle who is cream/white. She has dark orange stains all around her vulva area. Is this normal?

Answer
Hello Carrie,
These stains you refer to on your dog are quite common in dogs with white or light colored hair.  What happens is that chemicals in the skin and hair combine with chemicals in the urine and stain the hair a darker color.  The same thing happens around the eyes of light colored dogs, causing tear stains commonly seen in some breeds.
The best thing to do is to keep this area shaved and clean.  You might try wiping her vulva area with a wet wipe when she comes in from outside.
Some cheaper brands of dog foods can also cause light colored dogs to turn an orange/brown/red color because of the dye used in the food, but since your dog is experiencing the color stain in only her private area, it is most likely due to the above explanation.
There are a couple of things you can use such as shampoos for white dogs that will help brighten her area down there, or you can use a product called Diamond Eye or Show Eye, that will help remove the stain, but these don't totally remove the stains.

I hope this has helped you some.  If you have other questions, please feel free to ask me.
