Question
our 11 month old female standard has recently started pooping on our dining room rug.  she also wet on her dog bed.  she was totally housetrained before this started.  there  have  been no major changes in the household, and no major changes in her diet.  what could be the problem?

Answer
Could be a physical problem and she needs to see the vet.  If she isn't spayed, you can count on all sorts of flaky behavior as she goes through her season, especially creative, strenuous attempts to get loose and go find a male.  I am sure everybody would be better off if you have her spayed as soon as the vet is willing.  It could be she is just maturing and and challenging your leadership.

The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts.  Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog.  Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones.  You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
