Question

PJ
Hello,
I have an 8 month old Yorkie poo. Recently, I've discovered that his hair is not growing on the back of his legs and his coat is not as pretty as other Yorkie poo's I've seen in the past! I am concerned because I give him a bath atleast once every 2 weeks and his coat is not getting any better. What should I do? What shampoo and conditioner do you suggest? Also, what food do you suggest?

Answer
Hello Raven,
There are a few things you can do for your dog to help his coat grow in fuller and thicker than it is now.  The first thing you can try is to not bathe him as often as you are doing.  Frequent bathing strips the oils out of the coat, causing it to become brittle and break, which will cause shorter hair and thin areas.  Rather, bathe your dog when his coat becomes dirty or at most once every month.  You will want to use a good conditioner for his coat also.  The Horse conditioner called "Mane and Tail" works great as a dog conditioner because it has alot of protien and Nutrient rich vitamins that will help keep the coat shiny and healthy.
When you brush your dog, you can use a product that I like to use from Sally's Beauty Supply.  It is called "Proclaim Spray-On Conditioner"  Just spray it on your dog then brush the hair.  It will keep the hair from breaking when brushing and will also leave a pleasant smell and a wonderful shine.  You can also get the "Mane and Tail" conditioner from Sally's.

Your dog should also be coming into his adult hair here in a month or so, which is when the adult hair will grow into the puppy hair.  Conditioning is good during this stage, because the coat can mat easily when the adult hair is coming in.  Brush gently, but try to remove even the smallest mats because they can turn into something bigger if left unchecked.  When your dog gets his adult hair, his hair should thicken up some and come in more dense.

This is a diet I made up for dogs that need to grow thick coats or for dogs that have had skin problems.

1 lb Lamb burger, cooked and most of the fat drained off.
1 can Salmon
1 tin Sardines in Olive Oil
1 cup Spinach blended with the oil of the sardines
1 egg scrambled
1 1/2 cup Special K or Total Cereal
1 Apple Blended (or you can use 1/2 cup of Applesauce)
1/8 tsp Garlic powder
1 grated carrot
1/2 cup brown rice, cooked using chicken broth for better flavor
1/2 Tablespoon Cottage Cheese, this is optional and can be added per feeding rather than made up in advance.
You can either feed this diet straight or mix it in with your dogs dry food.  If mixing it in your dogs food, I would go 1/2 dry food and 1/2 mix.  I like foods like Bil-Jac, Nutro Natural Choice (though it has caused diarrhea in some dogs so switch if your dog has frequent loose stools), Royal Canin Poodle Variety, Chicken Soup for the Dog, Iams, Diamond Naturals, etc.
You can also add fruits or veggies that your dog likes, or take out things that you think your dog will turn his nose up at.
This recipe is for a large dog, but if you think this is more than you would use in a week, it freezes nicely.  It has vitamins and minerals that are good for a dogs coat and skin.
You can use Wild Caught Salmon Oil caplets (one caplet per feeding not to exceed 3 caplets a week) to help thicken your dogs coat; just be sure to brush your dog regularly to help distribute the oils through your dogs coat and skin.

I hope this has helped you some.  If you have other questions about this or other questions in general, please feel free to ask me.
