Question

Standard Poodle
I adopted a standard poodle, male, intact, and he is dramatically underweight. His hip bones, spine, ribs are clearly visible. He has been dewormed and vaccinated recently. He is very happy and out going, just to skinny. How do I put good healthy weight on him?

Answer
Hello Shawna,
I have a diet in mind that will help your dog gain some weight.  You might also try feeding him some canned Large Breed Puppy formula dog food, and Large Breed Puppy dry food as his normal food until he fattens up a bit.  Try to find a Large Breed formula as it will help his joints and bones, and is formulated for Large Breed dogs.

1 lb Beef, Chicken, Lamb or Turkey meat (cooked and drain 1/2 of the fat off)
1 can Sardines in Olive Oil
1 cup Spinach blended with the oil of the sardines
1 egg scrambled
1 1/2 cup Special K or Total Cereal
1 Apple Blended (or you can use 1/2 cup of Applesauce)
1/8 tsp Garlic powder
1 grated carrot
1/2 cup brown rice, cooked using chicken or beef broth for better flavor
1/2 cup Cottage Cheese
This recipe is for a large dog, but if you think this is more than you would use in a week, it freezes nicely.  I would give him about 1/2 this diet and 1/2 of what you are feeding him now, (approximately 1 1/2 cups 2 X a day)

Little treats here and there are fine also.  You don't want to overdo it, but 4-5 a day would be ok.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
