Yorkie-poo coat

Question

Cookie and her "daddy"
I have a 4 month old yorkie-poo. Her hair on her face/head/neck/& chest is curly and real pretty. But her hair on her back and butt is real more coarse-feeling. Recently her hair started thinning a little bit. And I was wondering if it could be time for her coat to start changing? And also, is the rest of her fur going to be pretty and waivy like her head and chest?

Answer
Hello Destiny,
Due to the fact that your dog has both Poodle and Yorkie in her, she may have two different coat types.  Her puppy hair will be a softer and more wavy type just because that is how puppy coat is, but her adult hair could be more curly and stiff.  There is no way to tell now what her adult coat will be later.  It could take on the Poodle coat and be more curly and softly stiff, or it could take on the Yorkie hair and be more straight and wiry.
Be sure that you aren't brushing her too much, try using a softer brush.  Also, when you brush her hair, be sure to spray it with a conditioner spray or you can make up your own with conditioner and some water in a spray bottle.
Feeding her some Fish Oil in her food once a week will help also.  You can buy sardines in Olive Oil that will give her the oils she needs.  It will help her coat and skin.

Her coat should change to her adult coat around 9-11 months.  You will want to really watch it then because mats can form fast and they can be large because the adult hair grows up and into the puppy hair.  Brush her at least every other day and also run through her with a comb down to the skin.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
