Question

red maltipoo
Hi, I'm going to be getting a dark red maltipoo (maltese poodle mix)soon, and was wondering if she is going to fade, and if so, to what extent, and how long before she does? Do all poodles or poodle mixes fade? And if she does start to fade is my only option to keep that color dying her hair?

thank you for your time
miranda

Answer
Hello Miranda,
I wish I could tell you that your dog will stay that bright Red color that she is now, but its very likely that she will fade.  Even if the Reds in her background were all bred Red to Red, since she is a Maltese mix, the White in the Maltese will cause her color to fade.  It would be the same thing as if you took Red paint and added some White to it.  Anytime you breed a solid colored dog to a White (or light colored) dog, the puppies will fade because they have that white in them.

Chances are good that since she is a dark Red, that she will stay dark for some time.  She is really pretty by the way.

You can use dye to help keep her hair darker, but just as in people, if you use dye, it may dry her hair and can cause hair breakage.  I have heard people mixing up a strong Tea and using it to help dye the hair more of a Red color.  You might contact your Breeder or other Poodle handlers in your area for more information.  People who show Poodles would have insider info on this because they run into this problem from time to time and need to "darken" their dogs hair, but approach this cautiously because most won't just come out and admit that they do this.

I hope this helps you some and if you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask me.
