Question
QUESTION: I have a female spayed 8 month old brown standard poodle. Her tail is 5 in and from 3-4 1/2 in she has an almost bald spot that has a lot of white hairs in and around the spot. The skin looks fine and she does bite her tail some times only when i touch it, but i think she might be playing. Its not getting better or worse, should I be concerned. I am also wondering about her coloring. She was all brown when I got her, but around her nose she had caramel colored hair. i gave her a short cut at 16 weeks and she had a strip of white hairs on her back. her hair grew out and I gave her a continental at 6 months and the hair on her butt grew back very light brown with tons of white hairs as well. I was told she was a brown, could she be a cafe or something else?

ANSWER: Hello Mandy,
She could be rubbing her tail in that spot and you not even notice.  It could be a quick scrape on the carpet or rub on the couch.  Watch her to see if she is doing anything like this.

As to her coloring, she could possibly be a Cafe A Latte, Silver-Beige, or just a light colored brown.  There could have been a cream or white dog in her background.

If you would like to send me a picture I can give you a better guess as to what color she is.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions, please feel free to help.

QUESTION: I was able to upload a photo of Bambi. I tried sending it in an e-mail but I could only send it as an attachment.

ANSWER: Hello again,
Your Bambi is a BEAUTIFUL girl.  I am very partial to the browns though I don't have one yet.  (I have 4 stds at the moment, 2 Silver 1 Blue and 1 Red)

Your girl looks Brown to me from the picture.  Since Brown is a fading color (like the Red and Silver) Browns can come in all Shades from very dark to a creamy light brown.
I have seen lots of Brown dogs with the scattering of white hairs in their coat.  You also see it with Silver dogs, only its harder to see it in the Silver fur.

Well, just had to comment on your Awesome Brown girl.  If you have other questions, you know where to find me.

QUESTION: Hi,
I cut Bambi's hair so it is all the same length on her bum, no hip pom poms, and the hair underneath is brown. So she has the fading all around and two spots of brown. The last time I cut her into the continental I shaved her to the skin. Do you know what's going on?

Answer
Hey There,
The reason that she has the two darker brown spots is that when a dog gets a skin sore such as a Hot Spot, the hair grows back in the original color which in your dogs case is the darker brown.
As he ages those spots will lighten.  This is common in the fading colored Poodles.
