QUESTION: Hey kim, my puppies have grown so very well they are nearly ready to go next week! I had a surprise yesterday morning, i knew my girl daisy was pregnant but since she was bred before i got her, i had no clue when she was due, she whelped 4 beautiful babies all by herself i was so proud.

anyways to my ? I have a new stud, his name is rascal and hes a teacup apricot poodle. he is now 7 months old and has been humping everything. all my other males have been of age so im not so sure he could breed my chocolate female that has just came in....do you happen to know the age they can typically breed? His testes have dropped. Ive attached some pics :)

ANSWER: Hello again Jesalynn,
Congradulations on Daisy's puppies.  Rascal is very handsome, btw.  What a striking color.

As to whether males can impregnant at 7 months old, you'll just have to try him and see.  Some males can get their sperm as young as 6 months old, but others tend to have a lower count until 8-9 months.  Just because he humps things, doesn't mean that he will have a higher sperm count, but just that he is experimenting.  I would try it though and see what happens.  He could be fertile.

Also, as to breeding  Rascal to your Brown female, I just wanted to let you know that since both colors (Brown and Apricot) are fading colors, so you will most likely have puppies that fade or are born light colored.  Even though Rascal is a medium Apricot, if you want dark chocolately brown colored puppies, you would need to breed to either another dark brown with Blacks in its background, or to a Black dog.  The risk with using a Black dog though is that since Black is a dominate color, you could end up with a litter of all black.  It would depend on what is in the Black dogs background, and in your Brown girls background.  If she has alot of Black behind her, then you would want to look for a Brown male with more Brown than Black behind him.  If she has alot of Brown in her background, you could use a Black male as long as he has either parent that is Brown (or even both parents) or a Brown colored male with some Brown or Black colors behind him.
With Rascal, the ideal paring for him would be with another Apricot colored female (which would make some awesome Apricot Puppies) or a Dark Red girl.  His Apricot color would cause the Reds to fade, but if they were dark Red to begin with, they would fade to a nice Red/Apricot color.
I don't know if I have said it before or not but, Color genetics are usually so hard to figure out that even Color Geneticists don't like to predict what colors can be produced when putting 2 dogs together.
Anyway, just threw that in there.

I hope that helps answer your question about Rascal.  Please feel free to ask me any Poodle questions, anytime.

QUESTION: Speaking of daisy, those puppies were fathered by a red male. They are black with a red tint, I've been trying to research as to if they will turn or if they are actually born dark and lighten up as they grow? I'll have to send you some pictures of my babies of Amber Leigh's. They are precious!

ANSWER: I would love some pictures of both litters of puppies.  The puppies of Daisy's will most likely be a faded black that will get that reddish tint when exposed to the sun.  They could also be whats called Blue if they have any Silver or Blue in their background.  It is typical of a Blue to be born Black with a Brownish/Red tint.  I would very much like to see pictures of them to see if I can determine what color they will be.  Its said that the color Blue carries the gene for all colors so if the male or female has any Blue in their background, then these puppies could lighten as they age and turn a Blueish/Black color.  Check the puppies faces and toes.  If there is some gray within the Black hairs, then you could have some Blue puppies.
Send me some pictures and I will have a look.  On Daisy's puppies, send me some of their faces, and backs. Can't wait.............Kim

QUESTION: No, I have a blue and these pups look nothing like her lol I've had her since she was a pup. I hope they turn red. I'll send some pics soon!

Answer
I have never heard of a Black tinted puppy turning into a Red color.  Alot of times the coloring or highlights on the back of a dog will go away with the first haircut.  I'll just have to wait until I see the photos.  Talk to you soon,
