Fence Height for Standard Poodle

Question
I just adopted a 6 year old standard female poodle who was rescued from a breeding farm. She is a real sweetie and ideal pet for my 6 year old daughter.  I want to fence in our back yard with standard 4 foot chain link fence. Will this be a high enough fence?  Do I need to go with a 6 ft. fence?  I have witnessed her jumping skills in the house already and I am afraid that 4 foot fence might be very easy for her to hop over.

Answer
Hello Caroline,
They don't call Poodles "Dogs with Springs in their Legs" for nothing.  Standard Poodles are very determined and if they want something bad enough, they will get it.  I had a Black Male Std Poodle named "Scout" that wanted to get into my trash can that was on top of a 3 ft tall dog crate.  I came in and found him on top of the crate with his head down in the trash can happily munching on whatever had attracted him to the can in the first place.  Another time, he was in my basement and since I didn't have a door at the bottom of the stairs yet, there was a board put up so my boys couldn't go upstairs (the upstairs part of the house wasn't finished yet) and hurt themselves on the construction taking place up there.  Scout saw our cat down there and gave chase.  They went around the basement for a bit, then the cat ran over to the board and jumped over it.  Scout ran up to the board, looked it up and down, crouched and hopped over it from a Stand Still.  I (once I closed my mouth and got over my shock) got a tape measure and measured the board.  It was 4ft 1 inches.  FROM A STANDSTILL!!  It still blows me away today.
He was about 1 1/2 yrs old, about 25 1/2" at the shoulder and in perfect health, but still, that is nothing to scoff at.  It also shows just how determined a Std Poodle can be when they want to be.  So I would go with the 6ft fence instead of the 4 ft fence.
You also might want to consider chain link inserts to slide between the links because if a Poodle sees something really interesting, they will actually use the links to climb to the top and then jump over, (you might wait to see if this is an issue for you) because I also had a dog, which happened to be Scouts father (Nitro), who climbed a chain link fence to get to a female in heat.

Congratulations on your new girl and I hope everything works out for you (it sounds like it will).  If you have any other questions/concerns/comments about this or other questions in general, please feel free to ask.
