diarrhea

Question
Our 11 mo old Maltapoo, Daisy, has had diarrhea for 3 or 4 days.  We have tried limiting her to a very bland diet (lean hamburger and rice, chicken soup, etc.).  Her appetite is reduced but not gone.  Her energy is reduced but not lethargic.  She goes about every 3 to 4 hours.  The bowel movement is soft runny and not dark.  We have also tried Kaopectate, but have noticed little improvement.  Is there anything else we can do before going to the Vet?

Answer
Hi, Sheila :-)

I would stay clear of chicken soup and hamburger because both of these foods contain a lot of Fibre which can possibly add to Daisy's diarrhea.

Boiled rice, boiled or grilled chicken and very bland scrambled eggs will keep her food intake up and will not cause more diarrhea.

I would strongly advise you to take her to your Vetinarian. Diarrhea this regularly every few hours needs medical attention. She may of picked up a tummy viral infection.

Meanwhile, give her lots of fluids. Good luck at the Vet.
