Question
Hi, I own a wonderful toy poodle who is less than a year old.  He is a great family dog and we have been considering getting another poodle.  Fate works in strange ways, this weekend a co-worker found a small dog wandering the streets and asked If I would  like to take the dog otherwise they were taking it to the humane society.  The little black dog was a big ball of matted fur. She could not even see because the fur was matted over her eyes. She could barely walk because the matter fur on her legs prevented this. She was very weak and her ears were completely black with mites. Her toe nails on one of her paws were growing upward. Her teeth had a lot of brown on them. I fed her well, bathed her, treated her ears and shaved the giant mat of hair off of her (she just layed their in relief). At that point I was sure, it was a tiny poodle, barely 3 pounds.
How could anyone have let her get in that shape? This condition was not the result of a few days of being lost, it was a result of neglect and abuse. We have nursed her all weekend and will take her to the vet this week, she is already a new puppy (or so we think?) She is the size of a puppy, however her teeth have a lot of brown plaque and her hair is already curley. Could she be an older dog just extremely tiny? I will find out this week, however I wanted to share my story and wandered if you had any advice. Regardless she will be a part of our family, because fate sent this tiny girl to us.

Answer
Thank you for taking her in and caring for her.  A young puppy will have gaps between its teeth and maybe a mix of adult and puppy teeth.  An adult will have a full mouth of uniform size teeth.  I am sure after examining her, the vet will be much better able to give a age for her than I could.
