Standard Poodle puppy size

Question
My wife and I purchased a Standard Poodle which was one of a litter of nine.
The mother is 23 inches and the father 22 inches. We asked for the larger of the 2 girls available but think we have been given the runt. We of course love her dearly but are disappointed in that we will only have an undersized girl. She is 10 weeks now and measures 11 inches to the shoulder and weighs about 5.5 to 6 pounds. Both of these figures seem on the low side to us. Our vet has suggested by the size of her feet that she will be large what ever that means. What do you think based on the above? Of course time only will tell.
Many thanks

Answer
Hello Nigel,
A poodle will get its average height around 6-7 months and will get its full height at around 9-11 months of age.  Your girl doesn't seem small for 10 weeks, especially since her parents were small.  It can also depend on the size of her grandparents so if they were larger, she could be also.  Since enviroment has a little to do with size, be sure that you feed her an appripreate diet and that she is fit and healthy.  This will help her grow to her full size.
I would estimate that your girl will be around 22-24 inches at the shoulder, and weigh around 40-45lbs.  She could also fill out some and be larger than my estimate.

In the future if you are looking for a larger dog, check the breeder and see some of his/her past dogs.  You want to look for a Poodle that is the size you want all over.  Watch breeders that say they have large dogs, but when you see them they are all leg.  Try to find a breeder who breeds for even-ness rather than just a taller Poodle.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask me.
