Is my poodle to old to bring in a new baby?

Question
Kathryn,  I presently have an 8-year old mini, Chloe.  I am contemplating purchasing a new baby sister (Parti Poodle Mini born in April 2005).  Is Chloe's age such that she would not welcome a newcomer in our home.  It is just Chloe and myself..no other person lives with us.  Would she be able to adapt or is she too set in her ways and jealousies would arise?  Any light you can shed would be helpful.
Regards,
Laura

Answer
Hi Laura,

As with people, it's a lot in the way you present the new addition.  First of all, the best way to introduce the new arrival is to have her already IN THE HOME and then bring Chloe in to the home. That way, she is not seeing the new arrival as a threat to her territory.  If she has not been spayed (and even if she has) she may treat the new dog as her baby.  Additionally, it is important to shower both dogs with attention - careful not to favor the younger dog over Chloe.  One thing I've found is to present the new dog to Chloe as HER new dog - HER baby, somehow helps.  There will be a few squabbles when the new dog tests her boundaries (i.e. trying to eat from Chloe's dish) but if you are loving, firm and handle it so Chloe knows that she is still the "top dog" - it should be okay.  I do wish you well. I've added dogs to my crew on numerous occasions with minimal problem.  For me, I let the current dogs out in the yard (fenced) to play and then bring the new dog in the front door, so he/she is there when they come in from play....  I'm not sure why that helps, but it seems to.

Good luck!!!

Kathryn
