Stomach pain

Question
QUESTION: From the first week I bought my son poodle, he had stomach problems. Often he sounds as though he has swallowed a cat.
This usually happens late at night and he keeps me up as he
is in pain. It lasts up to 4-5hours. I have spend thousands of
dollars at the vets, with xrays, blood tests, you name it. I have
bought every low irritant dry food and he has been on every medication. No one can help him? Can you help

ANSWER: Hello Jannine,
He sounds like he has some kind of digestive disorder.  You first might try giving him some KaoPectate stomach liquid.  You didn't say what size your dog is, but if he is a Toy Poodle, I would give him 1/2 tsp.  If he is a Miniature Poodle, 1 tsp. and if he is a Standard, I would give him 2 tsp.  See if this will settle his stomach.  Also, if he is in pain, you can administer a baby aspirin to him.  (if you don't have baby aspirin, you can use a coated 81mg low dose aspirin) Aspirin can be hard on a dogs stomach though so only use this if you can tell that he is in more than just minor pain.

You might also try him on this diet.  It is a healthy diet that will provide him with Vitamins and Minerals and will be gentle on his stomach.

1 Lamb or Turkey Burger (as its more sensitive on a dogs stomach)
1 can Sardines in Olive Oil
1 cup Spinach blended with a little water
1 egg scrambled
1 1/2 cup Special K or Total Cereal
1 Apple Blended (or you can use 1/2 cup of Applesauce)
1/8 tsp Garlic powder
1 grated carrot
1/2 cup brown rice, cooked using broth (either a meat or Veggie variety) for better flavor

This recipe is for a large dog, so you can either 1/2 it or mix it up and freeze a portion of it for later.  I would give him at least 1/2 of the recipe and 1/2 of his dry food.

Give this a try and let me know how it works for you,(if it doesn't work, let me know and we can try something else) and if you have other questions or concerns for me, please feel free to ask.

QUESTION: Thankyou so much for your time and effort in trying to help my toy poodle. I put forward your advice to my vet and he agreed that perhaps it could be a food
intolerance. He thought it would be a good idea to start him on a diet of only chickent and brown rice and perhaps add to it if all goes well. I part chicken 3 parts rice together with Betamox 200mg,Prednislone 5mg and Metrogyl 200mg. Two weeks into the diet, I am afraid
my dog suffered another severe stomach ache. I am at my wits end.If you are unable to suggest anything else, I just wanted to thank you for your response. I am in Australia and hope you understand the drugs I have named.
Jannine

Answer
Hello again,
I am not a Vet so I am not familiar with these drugs, but I did look them up and found that Betamox is the same as Amoxicillin, which is a broad-spectrum semi-synthetic penicillin, bactericidal in action.  Prednislone 5mg looks like it treats allergy symptoms and Metrogyl (Metronidazole) is an antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent used to treat redness and inflammation associated with a skin condition known as rosacea. Metrogyl (Metronidazole) may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

You might think about getting a second opinion about your dog.  It could be something as simple as allergies, or it could be something much worse such as Stomach Tumors or Cancer.  I can only suggest things as I am not a certified Vet and since I can't physically see your dog.

Check out this website about dogs and different Stomach problems and see if any of the symptoms match what your dog is expirencing.

Then we can see what else we can suggest for your dog.
