First heat cycle

Question
I have a healthy 15 month old Standard Poodle and she hasn't had her first heat yet. From what I've read she should have come into heat at 9 to 12 months. I wanted to breed her on her second heat but now I'm wondering if there is something wrong with her. Could I breed her on her first heat since it is coming so late? Thank you for your help. Donna

Answer
Hello Donna,
Its not so uncommon for a female to be late with their first heat, or to miss it altogether.  I would give your girl a couple more months or so and see if she comes into heat or not.  If not, you can contact your Vet and they can give her something to bring her into heat.

Actually, its best to wait until your dog is 2 to breed her.  The reason is that you give her body time to mature so that she can carry her babies to term and it won't stress her body as much.
If you would like info or have questions about breeding/whelping, please feel free to ask.
