Size of a poodle

Question

My dog
My poodle is 16 weeks old, weights 6 pounds, tall 8" and long is around 17", the vet told me that it will not be a big dog, he examined his legs and teeth, he told me that his average weight will be 11 pounds when he grows, I don't have any information about his parents, since the family that had him didn't want him anymore.

I'm not sure which size of dog I have.

Thanks

Appreciate your help.

Answer
Hello Iliana,
According to your Poodles size at the present, he looks like he could be a Toy Poodle.  The AKC ((American Kennel Club) says that a Toy Poodle is any Poodle under 10" and under at the shoulder.  They tend to be around 4-10 lbs at full weight.  He could possibly be a Miniature Poodle when he reaches his full size.  The AKC says that a Miniature Poodle is anything between 11"-15" at the shoulder and they can average around 15-30 lbs.

From the picture you sent, your dog may be a mix of Poodle and something else.  He has a round face and eyes, and his coat is straight (even for a Poodle).  He looks to me like a Bichon Frise (pronounced Be-Shon Free-zea) and Poodle cross.  Poodles and Bichons are compatible because they both have curly hair (the Bichon tends to have less curl and a more course hair) and the Toy Poodle is about the same size as the Bichon.  I estimate that your dog will be around 13-15 lbs and 10"-12" at the shoulder.
Of course, environmental factors will help determine weight in your dog, such as how much you feed your dog, how much exercise he gets, health and stress levels.  His background would also give you an idea of his size if you knew about his parents.  If you could get in touch with his former family, they might be able to tell you about his parents and if he is purebred or not.

You will have a better idea of what breed he is and size determination when he gets a bit older.  Most small breeds get their full height when they are around a year old and will fill out by about a year and a half.  You are welcome to send me updated photos when he is older if you would like me to evaluate him at that time.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions/comments/concerns, please feel free to ask me.
