Question
We are think of getting a standard poodle in the near future and I have been told to avoid apricot colour poodles as they are not as smart as the other colours. Is this true or just someone's poor experience?

Thank you Eric

Answer
Hello Eric,
Whoever told you that a color in a dog makes them less smart is alot dumber than the dog they were talking about.  Though the different colors tend to have their own personalities, Poodles are very intelligent; being number 1 in Trainability and number 2 in Intelligence (they follow the Border Collie).  I find that Apricot/Cream poodles tend to be very loyal and loving, they like to snuggle on the couch with you and I call them my shadow because they will follow you all over the house.
Some of the other colors traits tend to be:
Black- Very Versatile, and great Obedience dogs.
Brown- Known as the clowns of the Poodle world, goofy but smart (needs a smarter owner than they are)
Silvers/Blues- Tends to be more aloof, great watchdogs, more independent.
White- Very Showy, happy dogs that enjoy showing off, excels at Obedience and Agility.
Reds- Loyal Lap dogs, calm and quiet.  Makes great People/Therapy dogs as long as well socialized.

While the above is a fun fact to go by, you need to be sure that you go through a reputable breeder and that you meet the puppies parents (or at least the female) before picking out your puppy.  When picking out your puppy, you will want to look for an eager one that comes up to you and is not shy.  Also, he/she should have a nice wagging tail and not be fearful of noises or objects.  Try some tests with them.  Throw a toy for them and see which one brings it back.  Walk around and see which ones follow you.  Lay one on its back.  If it lays still, its more submissive and if it struggles, it may be more dominate.
Trust your instincts and go with your head.  Any Poodle, when raised the proper way with socialization, training (obedience is a good start) and an understanding of who is Boss (it should be you) will make a wonderful pet for you and your family.  I have had several Poodles in my life and I always tend to learn from them.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
