Acquiring a breedable standard female

Question
I live on Vancouver Island, B.C. Canada.
I am trying to find a black standard female pup that I can have the option of breeding.  It seems a very closed market.  We have bred horses in the past and recognize the need for highest breed standards.  We abhor 'puppy mills'.  What we want is a much loved family member who we can breed once or twice if we desire to a male of equal quality.  Impossible dream?

Answer
Hello Kathleen,
Sorry it took so long to get back with you.

I know exactly how you feel. When we decided that we wanted to breed these wonderful dogs, we were faced with 2 different options. One was that we buy a dog from a top breeder, yet we had to show it and follow the breeders "rules", in order to have breeding rights, or we buy from someone that had lesser quality dogs in order to get breeding rights.
Well option #2 was out for us because being ethical breeders, we are trying to improve the Standard of the Standard Poodle. So we had to buy from a Show breeder and follow their guidelines.

The sad thing is that this is pretty much the option when buying a good quality dog that you intend to breed.  Good breeders don't mind at all selling you a dog on a Limited Registery or on a Spay/Neuter policy, but mention that you want to breed it once or twice and they almost hang up on you.
Now that we are breeders also, I can understand why breeders do this, its because we don't want to flood the market with Std Poodles.  Also, top breeders don't want to sell their dog to someone who may breed it to a lesser quality dog and sell those puppies.  They don't want those puppies to bear their kennel name. (which would show up on the papers)

Try going to the Poodle Club of Canada at http://www.poodleclubcanada.com/
if you haven't been there before, or the Canadian Kennel Club at
http://www.ckc.ca/

If you are looking here in the US, I will send you a site with some Top Breeders listed. (I did see a couple from Canada listed also)

Just keep trying and if you have other questions about where to find a nice breedable Female, or other questions about Poodles please feel free to ask.

Have a great day, and Many "Poodley" Tail Wags.
