Question
I have a 6 year old toy poodle that was neutered 5 years ago. It completely altered his Personality.  Can you recommend me a vitamin that will boost his energy level some. I also would like a recommendation for something to rejuvenate his Hair coat. It has become dull and dry looking. He is under regular vet care and healthy. Please let me know of any other product known that would benefit my toy poodle.

Answer
Hello Reka,
I have made up a diet that will benefit a dogs skin and coat and also has vitamins and minerals in it that will give your dog added energy if he is lacking.  Try it out.  You can also try some of the dry foods listed to see if they don't help him out some.
The best foods are going to be a Meat based diet with less of the corn, grain, wheat or potato.  Nutro Natural Choice foods are good, as are Natures Recipe, Bil-Jac, Royal Canin for Poodles, or you can make up your own food to feed your dog.
You can give your dog healthy foods such as carrots, apples, peas (the purple kind is the best) and things like eggs, and Lamb meat instead of chicken or beef if you think your dog may be allergic to Beef or Chicken.  Here is a diet you can use that I made up, that provides vitamins and nutrients that is good for a dogs skin and coat.

1 lb Lamb burger, Chicken burger or Hamburger, cooked and most of the fat drained off.
1 can Salmon
1 can Sardines in Olive Oil
1 cup Spinach blended with the oil of the sardines
1 egg scrambled
1 1/2 cup Special K or Total Cereal
1 Apple Blended (or you can use 1/2 cup of Applesauce)
1/8 tsp Garlic powder
1 grated carrot
1/2 cup brown rice, cooked using chicken broth for better flavor
1/2 Tablespoon Cottage Cheese, this is optional and can be added per feeding rather than made up in advance.
You can also add fruits or veggies that your dog likes, or take out things that you think your dog will turn his nose up at.
This recipe is for a large dog, but if you think this is more than you would use in a week, it freezes nicely.  It has vitamins and minerals that are good for a dogs coat and skin.  I would use 1/2 of the recipe and 1/2 of your dogs normal dry food for now.

Give it a try and keep him on it for at least 3 weeks.  This will insure that it has the chance to get into his system.  It will also help to cut down on hotspots and skin sores.

If you have other questions for me about this diet, or other Poodle questions in general, please feel free to ask.
