Question
Kim:
We have a nine month old male black Standard - he is 24" and 58lbs - Is he now fully grown and should we switch him over to adult food? Our original plan was to stay on puppy food for one year at which time we would neuter and change to adult food but several people have said he is not going to grow anymore.
thanks - bob

Answer
Hello Bob,
Actually, it takes longer for larger breed dogs to mature out, even up to 2 yrs in some dogs.  It would be fine to leave your male on his puppy food for another 6-9 months or so, then gradually switch him over to the Adult.
Though your boy will probably not grow much taller, he will fill out some and you don't want to put him on a formula that will fill him out too fast and put un-necessary pressure on his growing joints.

Also, I don't know what brand of food that your dog is on, but be sure to read labels and be ingredient smart.  There are alot of products that look appealing to the eye, but may not be as healthy for the dog.
I tend to recommend foods like Eukanuba, Iams, Science Diet, Bil-Jac, Nutro Natural Choice, or Sensible Chioce brand dog foods.

***I would also recommend feeding 2-3 small feedings a day rather than 1 feeding because with Std Poodles being a more deep-chested dog, they are more prone to a condition called Bloat/Gaststric Torsion (where the stomach flips over on itself); which by feeding smaller portions more frequently, can reduce the risk for the stomach flipping over.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
