Toy Poodle Giving Birth

Question
Hi,

my Gf's toy poodle is giving birth right now. This little girl doesn't allow anyone to get near her, let alone touching her pup. She gave birth to a pup early in the morning, on my gf's bed. So my gf screamed cuz she thought the pup is a mouse. Later my gf and her mom examined the little animal and found it to be a pup. They have moved the mother and pup to their cage, and left the poodle mom and pup alone. The poodle mom might be disturbed by my Gf's scream, therefore is now forbiding anyone to get close to her. I don't know... She is worried.

I would like to know, how many pups does a toy poodle usually give birth to? How do i know if the poodle mom has completely given birth to all her pups? Given the poodle mom's current emotional state, what is the best approach to take care of her? What is the usual birth interval for pups?

That is all i can think of now. Please enlighten me with your expertise. Thank you.

Answer
Hello Ji,
Sorry it was a bit longer than expected to get back to you.
By now your female should be done having puppies.  Toy Poodles tend to have around 2-4 puppies per litter, but can have less or more depending on how many eggs were released.
It isn't uncommon for a female to have just one puppy.

You should also try to get the puppy away from the mother from time to time so that the mother sees that you aren't goint to hurt the baby and so that the baby will come to know you.  The sooner the puppy gets your smell down and understands who you are, the better.  You might try sleeping in an old tee shirt for a couple of days then put it down for the mother and puppy(s) to lay on.  This way, both mother and pups have your smell near them.
If the mother is possessive of her baby, this is just her being a mother, but you can't let her dominate you even over her puppy.  When she growls at you, hold her down on her side with her head on the floor and make her submit to you.  This is what a dominate dog would do if she was acting towards him like she is towards you.  He wouldn't tolerate it and would hold her down until she submitted.  If she would try to bite him he would either ignore her or bite her back.  If she tries to bite you, either muzzle her or use a heavy sweater/glove to keep her from biting through and put her in the submissive position anyway.  She has to see that biting isn't going to work before she settles down and lets you go ahead and see the puppies.
You should also take the puppies to the Vet for a health check and to get their dewclaws removed and their tails docked.  This needs to be done within the first couple of days before the puppies get their full sensory feeling.

I hope this helps you some and congradulations on the puppies you have.  Thanks for using AllExperts.com and if you have other questions/comments/concerns, please feel free to ask.
