Older poodles requiring insulin

Question
Hello Kathryn,

When I was taking my poodle a walk today I met up with a friend who was also taking her elderly poodle a walk.

My friend was feeling upset as Tigger, aged 13, had been diagnosed with diabetes.

She is having to give him an injection once a day but she has not been given clear instructions on his diet.

Do you have any suggestions on his basic food requirments or what he should or shouldn't have to eat ?

Many thanks for your time. Kath.

Answer
Hi,

I had a dog that was insulin dependent, and I fed her a brand of Science Diet - I believe it was k/d.  I'd also make sure he doesn't get table scraps or people food.

Another thing about the injections...if you try and pull up on a bit of skin and give the injection just in the skin part - not a deep injection....and pinching the skin a little while giving the injection will somewhat negate any pain he is feeling from the shot - the body can't easily transmit two types of feelings at once, so will keep him from feeling the shot as much.......strange but true.

I wish you and your friend luck!!  Check with a vet to make sure, but I do believe it is Science Diet K/D
