Question
My husband purchased a teacup poodle for me for Christmas. The breeder sent home with her a mixture of dry food Nutro puppy and adult (dry) and 1 can of puppy all Lamb and Rice. We were told to mix this and feed her 3 times a day. She has been with us for 6 days. On the 4th day we noticed that when we cleaned her bottom after potty she had slight blood on her. I started checking the stools and am seeing faint traces of blood. I called the breeder and she says that it may be that the food is not agreeing with her but she felt she would adjust and there was nothing to be concrned about at this time. What do you suggest. The puppy has all current vaccinations and has been wormed, and we do not have other animals in our house. Any suggestions as to what this may be? She does not seem to be uncomfortable or sickly but I don't want to let her get to that stage. PLEASE HELP !!!
Thank you,
Connie Hiebert

Answer
First off let me say that there really is no such thing as a teacup poodle.  That is just a marketing gimmick to sell these very small toy poodles at expensive prices.  They are toy poodles.  You really have to watch these very tiny toy poodles as they are prone to many health problems.  I would get her off the soft food ASAP.  Soft food is terrible for toy poodles and makes their teeth and breath go bad faster.  The hard food helps to clean their teeth and keep their breath more fresh.
What it sound like to me that you are seeing is coccidia.  I would take her to the vet and have a fecal exam done and have her checked.  Just because she has been wormed doesnt mean that she doesnt have them.  Sometimes puppies just have worms.  You might have to use a medication to help get rid of the worms.  If she has coccidea the vet will probably put her on albon.  Usually after a treatment of 10-14 days it will clear up.  Without treatment though it can be life threatening.  If her fecal comes back clear then it could be that she is just a little bloody from either still teething if she is 6 mo or under or that she was having a bit of diarrhea and her bottom is sore.
