Question
5 yr. old neutered male stdr poodle. Brought a male puppy standard[non-ntrd] home. Now 13 weeks old.  Pup wants to bite onto the legs, ears, fur,of the adult dog when pup is in play mode. Adult not aggresive toward pup but will bark or growl at this behavior but this doesn't deter the pup. Adult dog will pick up ball or toy and want to play chase me with pup at times. This game will encourage this pup's nip behavior. I do keep the pup away to prevent further anxiety to adult dog. Is this behavior in need of correction? also adult and pup do well in car together, napping & walking together.

Answer
Many adults want nothing to do with puppy biting games and their sharp little teeth. One of the standard techniques for teaching a puppy not to bite you is to divert it with a chew toy.  I think I have seen older dogs actually doing the same thing.  By assigning a high value to a toy and running off with it, that gets the puppy needles into the toy, not the older dog's hide.

I would tolerate the older dog barking or growling and even warning snaps when it wants to be let alone.  Support it by luring the puppy away from it with a toy.  As long as both are enjoying the chase game, let them go.
