Question
QUESTION: Hello Kim

My toy poodle Tommy is now 5 months old and I would like to get him cutted a little bit. Could you please advise me how the first cut should look like?
I also consider to get him neutered but my vet told me she would not recommend to do it untill a dog is 1 year old and if he is not agressive or so. She told he will put on weight a lot.
I have read many positive things about neutering and our neighbour has a yorkie girl so I would rather get him neutered but I am a little bit worried it can hurt him somehow.

Many thanks,
Ivana

ANSWER: Hello Ivana,
I would suggest a Puppy cut for your dogs first hair cut.  A puppy cut is a short cut on the body and a shaved face, feet and tail.  They will also pull the hair out of the ears and trim the toenails.
I would also go ahead and get him neutered now.  You don't want him to develop bad habits now that is caused by him not being neutered.  He may start peeing in the house or he may want to go search for females if he is left un-neutered.  He is fine to be neutered at his age.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.

QUESTION: Hi Kim

Thank you for your help. Lol she cutted him too much, he is very funny now (see attached).
I found he has a little bit dandruffs and dry skin on his back and legs - could you please recommend something to recover?
Many thanks,
Ivana

Answer
Hello again Ivana,
Yes, I would say that they cut him a little bit short, but left his head too poofy.  That is why he looks funny is because he has this short cut body but this fluffy head.  If they had rounded his head more and shaped it, he would have looked more handsome.  Don't worry about it though, its just hair and will grow back out soon.  You might look for a picture that you would like for Tommy and take it in for the groomer and see if she could groom him like the picture.

As to his dandruff, you can help by brushing him 2 times a week, which will help distrubute the oils through his hair.  You can also feed him sardines (in Olive Oil if you can find it) or salmon on his food maybe once or twice a week until his dry skin clears up some.  I would add about 3 sardines or a tablespoon salmon + some of the juice to his food.  The fish oil is good for both hair and skin and is also good for a dogs heart.
You might also shampoo Tommy with an Oatmeal shampoo, because oatmeal is good for moisturizing the skin.
Give these things a try, but be sure to give them about 2-3 weeks to work.

I hope this helps and if you have other questions for me, you know where I am.

Thanks again,
Kim
