Most will continue their heat cycles all their life.  The only escape from the hassle and dangers of them is to go ahead and have the dog spayed.  It is the only responsible course for all except serious breeders.  Most of them retire their breeding early and spay them.  Even spaying a dog late reduces the chances of cancer and increases it life span.
