Question
I have a 7 month old female black mini. She is super hyper and very friendly loves everybody. Recently this week I noticed if you reach your hand under backside she growls and looks like she wants to snap at me which never happened before. She is normal otherwise licking my face and friendly. Could there be something wrong? She's not fixed but I think shes too young to be going through her 1st heat cycle or isnt she? Either way could that be the reason?

Answer
Hello Chrissy,
She could be starting her heat cycle now and that may or may not contribute to her growling.  You need to stop her from growling at you no matter why she is doing it, or where you touch her.  To do this, start by doing the Pet Exam on her.
Lay her on her back in your lap with her head towards your stomach.  If she growls or tries to bite, tell her NO! in a firm voice and don't let her get up.  Start rubbing her stomach until she will relax.  After you can get her to lay like this and rub her tummy for several times, start the exam part.   Start off at her head.  Look in her ears, eyes, and mouth.  Check for anything that shouldn't be there.  Next, examine her legs, toes and body.  Lastly go over her back legs rear and tail.  If she gets restless or growls, hold her mouth, give it a gentle shake and tell her NO!  Praise and pet her when she quiets down and lays still again.  Continue until she will let you mess with this area without fuss.

Give this a try and if you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask me.
