Our male toy poodle wants to mate with his mother...

Question
Hello,

We have a female toy poodle who is just getting out of her 'heat' but she already has had successful intercourse with a yorkie about 4-5 days ago. We planned this because we always sell her litters since we were living in our home country; this is going to be her 6th litter I believe. In her last litter we decided to keep one of her pups, it was a male that lives with us too and is 2 years old now. The problem is that he insists of having intercourse with the female dog (his mother) BUT the mother does not want to even though she's in her 'heat'; she snaps at him I believe because she knows that he's her offspring, hence she's not attracted to him. This has happened for the past 3 times (1 1/2 years) that the mother has been in heat. What should we do?
We have tried to find a mate for the male dog but can't find one of his breed around where we live at...
Another question:
Can we register the female dog with the AKC even though we brought her from another country? She has all of her shots and up to date with everything; she has been attended by a vet since a puppy.

Thanks for your time!

Answer
Hello Erick,
Your male is just doing what comes naturally to him.  He doesn't see his "mother" as the one who produced him, but only as a female in heat.  He would breed her just like he would another mate that was unrelated to him.  The female may realize that he is her son, but that won't stop her from letting him breed with her if she is at the right state of her heat.  The best thing you can do for them is to put one of them in a crate for the duration of the females heat cycle, which can last for 2-3 weeks or so.
Finding a mate for your male won't stop him from wanting to breed with his mother also.  A male dog will breed anything on four legs that smells like a female in heat.

As for registering your female dog through AKC, you can only get her registered if she has both of her parents registered through the AKC.  If you have your female dogs parents registration papers (or know how to get them) then you can still get her registered.  If not, you might try getting her registered through the CKC (Continental Kennel Club).  You can find their website at:  www.continentalkennelclub.com/Registration.aspx

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
