Goopy eyes

Question
My one year old toy poodle has been itching her eye. It seems like the skin around it is dry. Then yesterday her eyes were watery and a little goopy (the discharge is light grey/clear in color). She has also been biting/chewing on her nails-I am not sure if these are related. Any advice is apprecitated.

Answer
Hello Bethany,
Though Poodles tend to normally get runny/goopy eyes like you are talking about, sometimes the reason can be due to Allergies.  Dogs can be allergic to many of the same things that people can be allergic to and runny eyes are a sign of that.  For Allergies, I give my boys Benedryl to help them.  For a dog your Poodles size, you could give her a 1/2 tablet.

You might also be sure that your dogs toenails are trimmed or filed down so that they aren't sharp.  You said that she has been scratching her eyes and if her nails are sharp, they could be contributing to your dogs itchiness around her face.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions/comments/concerns, please feel free to ask.
