Question
I was going out for a walk, and came across a very large, dark-haired dog. When I asked what breed it was, the owner said that he is a poodle. I told her the poodles I usually see are small and white, and she said that her dog is a "true poodle' and the ones I previously seen were not true poodles.
Is that true?

Answer
Hello Amy,
Well, Truth Yes and No.  Its true that there are large Poodles called Standard Poodles and that they were the orginal Poodle.  It is also true that they come in a variety of colors including Black, White, Brown, Silver, Red, Apricot, Cream and even Multiple colors.

Whats not true is that the little Poodles you see are not true Poodles.  The truth is that they have been bred down in size to get the smaller Poodles.  The Toy Poodle can be anywhere up to 10 inches at the shoulder, the Miniature Poodle is anywhere from 10-15 inches at the shoulder, and the Standard is from 15 inches up (there is currently no max height for Standards) with most being around 22-26 inches at the shoulder.

Please feel free to visit my Webpage for information and pictures of my Standard Poodles.
