Question
My puppy, Annabelle.
My puppy, Annabelle.
My Mini and Toy poodle mix is turning 1 years old on June 9th. Do you think she is to young to have a litter? She's been in heat before, but I do not know how many times. I got her from my cousins about a month or so ago. I want to breed her with a 2 year old male Toy poodle, that I'm thinking about buying. Or trying to buy.

Answer
Hello Victoria,
In my opinion, its best to wait until a dog is at least 2 yrs old before breeding them, unless they are male.  Males get their sperm as early as 6-7 months, but its better to wait until they are 1 before breeding, so that you can see what they mature out to be.
On Females, its best to wait because of Health.  You want your female to have totally matured and you'll want to be sure she is free of genetic health problems before breeding.  Having a litter before (at the least 1 1/2 years old) can be stressful and unhealthy on the female and can do the same to the puppies.
In the meantime, you can get her Vet Checked to make sure she is healthy and your Vet can help you get her ready to have puppies.  You might even have a Poodle Breeder in your area look at her to make sure she is a good canidate for breeding.

Your Poodle is a beautiful girl, but remember, As her picture says, "My Puppy", and that is what she is right now, a Puppy.  Let her grow up a bit before having her have puppies.

Again, I just wanted to say that this is my opinion.  There are those out there who think it is ok to have a litter at your dogs age.  Check with your Vet and then go with what you feel is right.

I hope this has helped you some.  If you have other questions for me about this, or other questions about Poodles in general, please feel free to ask.
