Question
QUESTION: I have a 3 1/2 pound teacup female and a 8 pound toy. They got hooked up the past weekend. How would I tell if she is pregnant?

ANSWER: Oh man that is dangerous.  That little female should NEVER be bred.  She needs to be spayed right away.  I wouldnt even take a chance on the litter.  You will probably have to have a c-section that could run up into a thousaand or more.  There is no way to tell this soon if she is pregnant.  Infact you wont be able to tell for sure until she is 35-45 days a long and either an unltra sound is done or an x-ray.  I certainly wouldnt wait that long and put your little one at risk.  It could potentially kill her.

QUESTION: I bought them to breed they are both champion lines. This is my first time breeding. Her mother was also a 3 pound teacup and had two pup's no problem. I am worried about her now. Can a vet tell if she is pregnant?

Answer
Just because they are champion lines doesnt mean that they should be bred.  A female that small should NEVER EVER be bred. Just cuase the mother had no problems doesnt mean that your dog will be that lucky.  My guess is that the breeder used a small male for that female.  Let alone the health issues those tiny dogs have and their offspring have.  I would NEVER breed a female smaller than 5 lbs and for that you should be an expert breeder.  A female should always be bred to a smaller male.  Your female is in even more danger now.  If she came from CH lines that means that everything behind her is larger.  Since only those dogs that are 9-10 inches do well in show.  That means she has the potential to produce very large puppies.  Combine that with the fact that the male is HUGE compared to her with also large dogs behind him and you have a lethal combination.  Breeding isnt just about putting two dogs together and mating them.  There is a LOT of issues that should be considered before even attmepting to breed.
No a vet would not be able to tell until those dates I told you above.  A vet would have to do an Ultra sound or an xray to tell.  They are still working on developing a pregnancy test for dogs like they have for people.  I have heard that some vets are testing out some new pregnancy test to see if they really work, but the results are still subjective and the cost is prohibitive.
