Lhasopo!

Question
She is much more po than she is Lhaso! At one years old Mollie is a bundle of energy who is now just discovering her mouth!  Fortunately, she is not chewing everything in sight, she just loves people's hand, pant legs, etc. I am having a real hard time with her jumping on everyone, This really would not be a problem if she didn't use her mouth. She is definitely NOT biting but really just a little too enthusiastic about life!   Any suggestion?   Thanks!   Wendy

Answer
The most humane way I've found to correct behavior is to get a spray bottle and fill it with water.  When she gets excited and begins to jump, say "No Mollie" and spritz her with the water. She will probably stop and look at you like you just hurt her (you did hurt her pride a little) but when she stops, tell her what a good girl she is.  If she stops when you tell her to do so, give her a little treat (training treats are usually found in petsmart or something like that so you aren't overfeeding her on treats).  Much praise when she gets it right is the best way, but the spritzer works too. Some folks use noise - they put pennies in a pop can and shake it when their dog is misbehaving while saying "No!".  It may work on Mollie, but mine respond much better with the water bottle. Now if they're misbehaving and KNOW they are, all I have to do is say "Do you want the bottle?" and they quit.

I wish you luck with your Mollie - she truly sounds delightful.

Hugs,

Kathryn
