Question
I have a puppy and I don't like the breed when it has all the hair cut.
Its really necessary to cut all its hair or it possible to just cut the hair ends?

Looking forward to your answer.

Answer
Hello Martin,
The neat thing about Poodle hair is that you can do about anything with it.  You can shave them down short or leave them long and just give them a trim.  Poodle hair is actually hair like ours and can be trimmed or cut and left long.  It is good to trim the ends (which are called the guard hairs and are the longer more course hairs vs the softer undercoat), so they don't become split and damaged.  Like our hair, if you don't trim the hair regularly it can break off and then the hair won't grow.
If you take your dog to the groomer, instead of asking for a shave, ask them if they will scissor the dog taking off about 1/4 inch or so.  That way, you don't cut the dog down very far, but you still get the longer guard hairs off.

You might consider a short shave for the first cut though.  This causes the dogs adult hair to grow in right away rather than waiting until the dog is around 9 months old.  If you wait, you run the risk of heavy matting when the adult hair grows into the puppy hair.  If you do wait, you will need to be diligent with your brushing around the 9-11 month old age.  You will notice the matting starting under the arms, back by the back legs, under the belly and on the legs themselves.

If you plan on grooming your dog yourself, you can either find useful information in grooming books or online.  Just type in How to Scissor the Poodle body video into your search engine for information and How To videos.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask me.
