Fur off quarter size place on toy poodle

Question
My white toy poodle has been scratching in one specific area on her back.  I just noticed today that she has scratched the fur off and the raw skin is reddish pink and about the size of a quarter.  I don't have any idea what it could be.  Do you, please?  I just noticed the fur being off today, though she has been scratching with her paw for a while. I thought perhaps she had a flea.

Answer
Hello Janine,
It could be an allergic reaction to a number of things.  Dogs can be allergic to fleas, so it could be that she has fleas, but it could be anything that she has come in contact with and might be allergic to.

You might try putting Benedryl cream on it to see if that helps.  Try to watch her so that she doesn't lick it off.

If you still don't find out what could be causing it after the Benedryl cream, you might try calling your Vet and seeing what they can tell you.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions, please feel free to ask.
