blood in male poodle ejaculate

Question
My standard poodle has a large erection about once a week at which time he ejaculates, usually some clear liquid.  The last couple of time there has been some blood ejaculated as well as the clear fluid.  Is this the bursting of a blood vessel or an indication of something more serious?

Answer
Hello David,
I would assume that as long as its just in the ejaculate, and not coming out in the urine or dripping out of the penis, that its just a torn blood vessel.  You might contact your Vet for conformation on this, but as long as its just a small amount of blood and that you notice that it stops after the ejaculation, he should be ok.  If it bleeds alot or doesn't want to stop right away, you may try applying a cold compress or an ice pack to his penis (be sure that the ice itself doesn't come in contact with the penis, wrap the ice pack in a cloth or sock).  This will cause the blood vessels to constrict, helping to stop the blood flow.  It will also help shrink the penis after the erection.

I hope this has helped you some.  If you have further questions about this, or other Poodle questions in general, please feel free to ask me.
