Answer
Hello Jami,
Since she is a lighter colored dog, her skin is most likely to be more sensitive to being brushed or trimmed.  You might consider using a Pin brush rather than a slicker brush as the pins are thicker on a pin brush, and you might also look for ones that have plastic tips on the ends of the brush.  The pin brushes at the Pet Stores sometimes have a bristle brush on the other side, but if you can find one that is just the pin brush it would be better as you won't need the bristle brush for the Poodle.  Using a comb after using the pin brush will help remove any mats that you find in the coat.  Even if brushing a Mat out hurts her some, leaving the mats in can cause sores on her skin.  Try to gently separate the mat little by little rather than just trying to comb it out.  You can also use something like No-More-Tangles or a spray-on Conditioner to help remove the mat more easily.  If nothing else, you can cut the mat out with scissors, but be careful because mats grow at the base of the skin and if you aren't careful, you can cut the skin thinking that you are cutting the mat.

If her skin gets irritated when you shave her, you can apply lotion to her skin after shaving.  I like to use Skin-So-Soft, or baby lotion.  Try it on a small part of your dog first before using it all over to be sure that she isn't going to react to it.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
