duration of heats

I have a 3 year oldfemale miniature poodle, she has not been spayed yet.  What is the duration of her cycle?  and can i get her spayed while she's in heat?  Thank you, Susy

The bloody discharge lasts 2-3 weeks.  Her fertile period a little longer.  It may be a month until the swelling of vulva and nipples goes down, and another month before most vets will spay her.  Talk to yours and plan to have it done as soon as you can.

The second and third weeks are when the most risk of accidental breeding is. Don't take this lightly. She will do anything to get loose and get to a male. Once loose, an accidental breeding and an unwanted litter is far from the worst that can happen. Such breedings can also result in fatal infections. She can get killed when she dashes heedlessly across the road in front of a car. Other dogs or coyotes may kill her.
