Feeding pregnant poodle

Question
My toy poodle is about 35 days pregnant and since becoming pregnant will not eat any dog food. I have tried several kinds. She will eat human food but is being very picky there as well. My question is what kind of human food will be best for her and how much. I'm worried about over or under feeding her.She is about 8 pounds.

Thank you for your time!

Answer
Hello Kim,
If it is possible to get your dog to eat her dog food, then this would be better than feeding her human food.  There are so many preservatives and additives that are found in human foods that aren't good for dogs.  You might try canned food for her, such as Iams or even Pedigree.  Try mixing it with her dry dog food to see if she will eat it that way.  You can also add Chicken or Beef broth to see if this will entice her.
If she still won't eat her food, try this recipe that I made up for dogs.

Try this diet for her.  You can add it to her regular food and mix it in, or you can give this to her by itself.  I would start by adding some to her regular dry food then go straight if she refuses it.
Ingredients for "Kim's Doggie Diet"
1 lb Hamburger(Raw) or Turkey Burger (you can cook the turkey if prefered)
1 can Salmon
1 tin sardines in Olive Oil
2 cups packed Spinach, cooked and chopped (you can use Chicken broth if preferred to cook it down in)
1 cup Special K or Total Cereal
1-2 eggs cooked and scrambled
1/2-1 cup applesauce
The Fruits and Veggies are a try and see ingredient.  You have to try them with your dog and see if they like them or not.  Some dogs love a variety, others turn their noses up at any and all produce.
Fresh Fruit: raspberries, blueberries, bananas, pears, mangos, pineapples, apricots, peaches, and strawberries,
Fresh Veggies: Carrots, Cabbage (red is preferred, small amounts), Peas, Califlower(chopped small amounts), Mashed Sweet Potato (unless your dog has Yeast issues), lettuce, cucumber, beets, zucchini, sprouts, Tomatos, Bell Peppers.
Optional: Cottage Cheese (great for adding weight), Yogurt (for stomach issues)

Mix it together and serve in small batches.  If you have a small dog, it freezes nicely.
About all you can do is leave the food out where she can access it and she will eat when she is hungry.  If there are treats she likes, you can give her a treat or two to boost her weight.

For a dog her size, I would give her about 1/2 cup dry food and 1/2 cup of this mixture to see if she will eat it.  Leave it out for about 3 hours to see if she will eat it, plus leave dry food out all the time.  If she gets hungry enough, she will eat.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions about this, or other questions in general, please feel free to ask.
