Is my poodle going to have babies

Question
Hi my toy poodle is two and a half years old . She was crossed on 24 th oct as my dog trainer said she is in heat as vulva was swollen but I did not notice any discharge during that time , but  the next night noticed  drops of blood in a lighter Pinkish red on the floor but the next morning  again there was nothing . Now the vulva is back to the normal size . Do you think she would have got pregnant . I have started her on folic acid as was told to do so . Is that ok and she also takes her daily multivitamin .
Look forward to a reply . Thank you

Answer
Hello Jaish,
The best time to breed a female dog in heat is about 9 days after you see blood around her vulva.  Sometimes you may not always see the blood, but unless the dog is keeping themselves really clean, you should notice some bloody discharge, either when the dog urinates or if you wipe the vulva area with a napkin.  She will also be in "Standing Heat" where she will stand for a male when presented. There is a small window of about 8 days that a female is most receptive to get pregnant.  After the breeding, a female will be pregnant for around 63 days, so if your dog was bred on Oct 24th and it was a sucessful breeding, you can expect the puppies around the 26th of December.
The only way to tell if the female is truly pregnant or not after a breeding or suspected breeding is to do an ultrasound.  This can be performed 45 days after the breeding by your Vet.  Other than an ultrasound, you may notice her belly getting larger and her nipples will harden some.
As she gets really close to whelping, she may start "Nesting" where she prepares a place to have the puppies, and she may get anxious.  If she starts the nesting, you should prepare a place where she will have the puppies and try to get her settled there.  Dogs will sometimes look for a small space to have the puppies, such as the back of a closet or under the bed.  Its best to prepare her a box and have her get comfortable there because whelping is a messy process and its best if you can be present at the whelping.
It is ok that she take the Multivitamin and the folic acid, which will help her with her pregnancy.
When she is a couple of days from Whelping, you will notice her nipples ozzing some whitish liquid.  Its also called "Waxing".  This is the Colostrum that the puppies will first drink that provides them with antibodies to help them.  This is a sign that she is very close to Whelping.  If you feel comfortable taking her temperature, you can use a rectal thermometer and gently insert it into her rectum.  A dogs normal temp is around 101.5, but when the female gets ready to whelp, it will drop to as low as 98.0  When you see this drop, you will known that you will have puppies within 24 hours or less.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions about this, about the Whelping process or other Poodle questions in general, please feel free to ask me.
