Seizures

Question
Is there a special diet I could feed my toy poodle (weighs 6 lbs) that might help with seizures?  She is 2, will be 3 in August.  She had her first seizure in Jan. of this year, 2009, and then another May of 2009.  I have been reading that a vitamin and mineral supplement might help.  She has been checked out by her vet, blood work ran, nothing showing up as to why she is having seizures.  Since the seizures are far apart, vet does not advise putting on any type of meds.   What do you know of any type of vit. and min. supplements and/or dog foods?  Any advise I would appreciate.
Thank you

Answer
Hello Wanda,
You might try this diet that I have suggested to other people with seizure dogs.  It has vitamins and nutrients that are good for dogs.

1 lb Hamburger, Lamb, or Turkey Burger
1 can Sardines in Olive Oil
1 cup Spinach, blended with the Oil of the Sardines
1 egg scrambled
1 1/2 cup Special K or Total Cereal
1 Apple Blended (or you can use 1/2 cup of Applesauce)
1/8 tsp Garlic powder
1 grated carrot
1/2 cup brown rice, cooked using broth (either a meat or Veggie variety) for better flavor
1/2 cup Cottage Cheese (optional)

This recipe is for a large dog, so you can either half it, or make it up and freeze it until you need it.  I would give her some in her dry food.  For her size, about 2 tablespoons or so would do.
As far as what kind of dog food to feed her, as long as its a high quality food it should be ok for her.  I suggest something like Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Sensible Choice, Bil-Jac, or Nutro Natural Choice.

As to checking what is causing the seizures, Vets need to draw blood WHEN THE DOG IS HAVING A SEIZURE to be able to tell what may be causing the seizure.
The main treatment for a dog with seizures is Phenol Barbital (sp?) and it is not recommended for your dog unless his seizures are very frequent (like more than once a week or so) and harsh.  The treatment is said to be alot worse than the seizure itself.

When my boy has a seizure, first he gets very clingy as if he knows whats coming.  When the seizure starts, I get him on the floor (if I can) and talk to him to let him know I am still there.  I pet him and even say a little prayer over him.  It helps alot, not only for him but also for me.
When he is done with the shaking, I sit with him until he re-orientates with his surroundings, then he goes back to being his old self again.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
