Moles that keep occuring

Question
Hi Kim...I have a yorkie poo and a bishon poo.  My yorkie is terrific but my 2 year old bishon  poodle keeps getting these very tiny moles in his right ear that within a month become as big as a quarters.  This is the 3rd time they have appeared in the same ear.  I have had them removed twice before with the most recent removal in April of this year.    He has 2 more that had reappeared again within this month in the exact same ear.  The doctor says that they are not cancerous but each time I have them removed it costs about $500.  THis new surgery will be the 3rd in 8 months,  Aside form being costly, I am trying to find out of I should take him to a specialist to find out if there is anything I can do to prohibit them coming up over and over.  Any idea what they are or why they keep coming up in his ear?  They start off very very small like a human mole but grow rapidly with rough edges all around.  They almost look like black miniature caliiflowers....PLease help....He is only 2 and I really hate to have to him deal with this again...

Thanks, Kelli

Answer
Hello Kelli,
These tumors or warts you are describing are very common in dogs and are usually not a big issue.  They are caused by a virus in the dogs system and while most appear on the dog, never change in size and the dog doesn't get many of them, other dogs can have problems with them.  Sometimes a dog will bother them and they will bleed, sometimes they come back after being removed (in your dogs case), and other times dogs get lots of them on their body.
They can either be surgically removed or frozen off, but sometimes they reappear and there is nothing that can prevent them from reoccuring.
I would go ahead and contact a specialist about them to see if there is anything they suggest for you to do.

Check out this website, it can tell you what they are and why they keep showing up.

You might ask your Vet if he recommends azithromycin as a treatment option.  It is not widely used as of yet, but has been found to help with these types of warts.

I hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions about this or other Poodle questions in general, please feel free to ask.
