Question

Poodle
We are interested in adopting a dog into our family. We have found a poodle absolutely adorable! I am not too familiar with poodles, and was wondering if his looks will change as he gets older. He is just 3 months right now, and has the prettiest hair. I don't want him to end up looking like a regular poodle (no hair on face). Do the poodles lose the hair around their faces as they grow, or is it how they are cut? I have attached a picture of him. Thank you, Lori

Answer
Hello Lori,
Poodles hair is different that most dogs in that it is more like people hair rather than Fur that most dogs have.  A Poodles hair is also non-shedding and because of that has to be trimmed or it will just continue to grow.  The face, the hair on the feet and tail are no exception.  If you don't cut the hair on the face, it too will continue to grow.
You can choose to leave it long, trim it into a mustache, or shave it close.  Its all personal preference.

I would recommend shaving under the eyes so that tear stains don't form from the chemicals in the tears mixing with chemicals in the hair.  The result is those awful reddish brown tear stains that actually stain the hair a different color.
By shaving under the eye and applying vaseline right under the eye, you can avoid the majority of stains from forming under the eye.

Also, do know that the Apricot color is a fading gene and that your dog may gradually fade to a lighter color as he ages.  Some will turn an almost cream color as they fade, some will just lighten a bit.  It depends on their genetic makeup.

Your dog looks really cute, and I hope he stays that way.
Thanks for your question and I hope I could be of some help.  If you have other questions about your boy, please feel free to ask.
