Changes in genitalia of our female poodle

Question
We have had a rescue poodle approximately 20 months old since December 2008 and she has been spotty bleeding for about eight days.  Her genitalia appear to be quite swollen and she is constantly licking.  Is this normal?  How long after her season should we have her spayed.  There is no chance of pregnancy.  Thanks.  Pat

Answer
Hello Patricia,
Your female is in heat at the moment.  At around 9-11 days your female will be ready to breed, what is also called "Standing Heat".  In this stage, she will stand for the male to mount her.  She will stay in this stage for about 2 weeks (or until the male starts to refuse her).
During her heat cycle, her valva will swell to allow the male to penatrate her easier.  She will also bleed during this time, which is why she licks herself more frequently.

I would recommend getting her spayed 2 weeks after she is out of heat.  I would say no earlier than the 16th.

Hope this helps you some.  If you have other questions, please feel free to ask.
