Question
Hi Kim,
I have a 5 yr old male silver Standard poodle. Recently we moved out of our house due to a mold issue & moved into my parents home. My parent have a bck female standard poodle. They tend to play a lot sometimes a lil agressively, more on the female's part.  About 3 weeks ago my baby started to shake all over and yelp, whine or nip if u tried to touch his ba.ck leg or hip area. It lasted about 20min. He gets very stiff after and refuses to move for awhile. It scares me. Then tonight it happened again. He came and sat next to me and in 5 mins he tried to stand and started shaking, especially his back legs. He whined and yelp when I tried to touch his back hip/leg area and he shook for 10 mins. He got very stiff and sat still. He quieted down but would whine, shake & yelp again when he needed to move.. I touched his back area and he yelp again..I can't find a lump or an area that seems out of normal but he is making me very worried. What can I do? What could it be? Outside of these 2 instances, he acts fine, runs, plays, eats...

Answer
Hello Amy,
It sounds like your dog has a hip or pelvis that is dislocating, or poping out of place when he runs or plays.  It will be very sore when this happens, until it pops back into place, then he will be fine again.
My suggestion is that you see your Vet about this.  He can give you pain medication for when he pops it out of place, and possibly some supplements to help also.  If it keeps up, your dog will need surgery to replace the ball joint so that it won't pop out anymore.  It doesn't sound as bad as Hip Dysplasia, where the ball joint is poorly formed so that it falls out of the socket, but it could turn worse if you don't get it looked at, or at least call your Vet and tell them what has happened.

I hope this helps you some. If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
