Poodles-smooth coat?

Question
Hi is there such a thing as a poodle that has a "smooth" coat or do they all in time get their curly coat.  I was told by a friend that they really do exist, but I cannot find anything about them on the internet.  It makes me wonder if they breed a poodle with somthing else to get a smooth coat.

Answer
Hello Susan,
To my knowledge, I have never heard of a "Smooth" coated Poodle.  I know that when poodles are young, their hair is more straight than curly due to it being Puppy coat, but even puppy coat has a bit of curl in it.
You can help make your Poodle's coat straighter by blow-drying your dogs coat after a bath and brushing it with a slicker brush.  This process will help straighten the coat and make it stand up rather than lay in curls.  The longer the dogs hair, the straighter it will look.

Sometimes pet quality Poodles will have a softer coat that is more straight than curly.  This may be what your friend is referring to.  The softer hair has less body and can appear straight, but I have never seen a straight haired Poodle as compared to the hair of a Pomeranian or Golden Retriever, as I assume thats the type of straight hair you are referring to.

Even Poodle Cross breeds tend to have a more wavy hair rather than straight.  By the time you would get a Poodle with straight hair (by the continued mixing of a Poodle with a straight haired dog until the puppies had straight hair), you would have bred the Poodle out of the mix.

I hope this answered your question.  If you have other questions, please feel free to ask.
