Question
I have a 1 yr old standard poodle male. Our female is in heat and flagging him, he is interested but not getting an erection. Do poodles take longer to mature than other breeds or what do you think could be the problem?

Answer
Hello Tracey,
Your female may not be in full breeding heat yet.  Your female may be standing for him and flagging, but if she isn't in full heat, he will know and won't be interested until she is fully ready.  Females will start to bleed and 9 days after that they are ready to breed.  They will be in breeding heat for about 5 days.  We tend to breed our girls at least 2 times to insure that the eggs got fertilized.

You might also watch the two of them and see if the male will let you assist if need be.  Some males get overly excited and mount the wrong end.

Give them some more time and if you have other questions, please feel free to ask.
