Poodle Nose Skin

Question

Suzie's Nose
Aloha.  Our minature poodle Suzie just turned 16.  She has a skin condition on her crotch, armpits and neck that we've been treating w/ Atopica (Cyclosporine capsules).  I've noticed lately that her nose wasn't staying moist, and tonight I went to go pull off a piece of what I thought was hair from her nose when a small piece of dried black (dead?) skin came off easily with no pain to her.  Have you ever heard of of this?  I thought maybe the skin condition had moved to her nose skin, or that she was just getting old and the lack of moisture to her nose was a factor of her age and lead to the skin dying off.

Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hello Scott, Chey, and Suzie,
Depending on the climate that a dog is in, a dry nose sometimes happens and isn't a big thing to worry about.  A dogs nose (whether its wet or not) doesn't show if the dog is sick or not any more than yours or mine. (its an ole Wives tail that says that if your dogs nose dries out then its sick)

Some medications can dry out the skin which can in turn cause the nose to also become dry.  If it bothers you some, you can put something like margarine on it to help keep it moist.  I like to use Carmex, but you have to watch that your dog doesn't try to lick the product off.
Her nose may return to normal.  If it remains dry it won't do her any harm.  Dogs noses stay wet which helps scents stick to them so the dog can better investigate the smells.

I hope this has helped you and Suzie.  If you have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
